Home lawn maintenance
Every lawn owner knows that home lawn maintenance is quite a hard work that needs time, money, patience and responsibility. Unfortunately, not every lawn owner knows all the practices of home lawn maintenance. Despite the list of them is not very long, following all of them sometimes may seem difficult.
There are two practices that are considered to be the main when it comes to home lawn maintenance. The first one is mowing which is not as easy as it may seem. When mowing your lawn you have a lot of rules to follow. Specialists recommend to mow the lawn once a week or at least once in two weeks, so you should include mowing in your schedule. The second aspect is the height of the grass. Every grass type has its ideal mowing height, but if you are not aware of this, you should follow the rule to cut no more than 1/3 of the height of your grass. The third aspect: you should choose the mower (reel or rotary) according to the type of the grass. Keep in mind that rotary mowers are cheaper, but reel mowers cut the grass better and more thoroughly.
The second important practice of home lawn maintenance is fertilizing. Speaking about this aspect it should be mentioned that there are organic and synthetic fertilizers and each type is suitable for certain kinds of grass. What is more, fertilizers are usually applied in fall, but sometimes it is necessary to use them in spring. Fertilizers feed grass with nutrients and make it greener and healthier. But you should also be careful when applying fertilizers. Follow all the recommendations, otherwise you can cause harm to your lawn.
Watering or irrigating is also the question of paramount importance, especially for those who live in dry regions. Every lawn owner should know that if the grass does not get enough moisture it becomes lifeless and is easier burnt by the sun, but if it is overwatered it is easier attacked by diseases, so, it is better to keep to the golden mean.
It is worth mentioning that lawn owners often meet the problem of soil compaction. In this care they should be aware of such practice as aeration. Home lawn maintenance also includes thatch control and weed killing. All of these should be done for the health and the good-looking of the lawn.
Sometimes you may face a problem of soil acidity which is not very good for the grass. To improve the situation you should apply lime. But to find out if the soil is really acid, you should do a soil test, which is considered to be an occasional home lawn maintenance procedure.
If you pay attention to all the practices mentioned above, your lawn will be the greenest and the healthiest in the neighborhood.
