The majority of lawn owners know that usage of lawn fertilizer can make their lawns lush, healthy and good-looking. But unfortunately, not everybody knows how to choose the right lawn fertilizer, when and how to apply it.

Dwelling on the point of usage of lawn fertilizers it is possible to say, that there are several important rules every lawn-owner should follow, no matter what fertilizer he/she has.

Rule number 1

Remember that specialists recommend distributing no more than 1 pound of fertilizer to 1,000sq. feet of your lawn. Follow all the instructions, otherwise you can cause harm to your lawn.

Rule number 2

Lawn fertilizer should be distributed only when the foliage of your lawn is dry, because if a leaf has even a small drop of dew, it’ll hold the fertilizer, which may lead to a serious burn. When you finish fertilizing your lawn it is recommended to water it as thoroughly as possible. It is done on the purpose to wash away the remains of fertilizer into the ground where it can be absorbed by the roots. The time before an afternoon shower is considered to be the best for fertilization.

Rule number 3

If you want to distribute fertilizer uniformly, you should divide it into 2 parts and distribute one of them walking on your lawn from east to west and the second – from north to south.

Rule number 4

Use fertilizers very carefully and keep in mind that they as cause serious harm to your lawn if used inappropriately. For example, it is advised to do fertilizing in 2 weeks (minimum) after liming. Ignoring this rule may bring terrible results. As far as lime and fertilizer may react, there can appear a gas which burns the grass. So, instead of lush green lawn you may get a burnt one.

Speaking about liming it should be noticed that it is not a fertilizer, as its main task is to control the soil acidity but not to feed it.

Nowadays there are a lot of kinds of lawn fertilizers – liquid and dry, Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus, organic, synthetic and so on. But in any case before buying it make sure that the lawn fertilizer suits the soil and the condition of your lawn. Apply in accordance with the instructions and the rules mentioned above.
