Lawn mowing

Keeping a lawn healthy is impossible without mowing which prevents the lawn from getting different diseases. Moreover, when the grass is too high, and the height is not uniform, the lawn may seem unattractive. But before you start your lawn mowing, make sure you know how to do it right and safe.

As it was mentioned above, lawn mowing is necessary for keeping your lawn healthy, but you should know that it is always a big stress for the grass, and if it is done improperly, your lawn may suffer a lot. The best time for lawn moving is considered to be an early morning, but when the dew is dried out. Mowing wet grass is unsafe because then diseases spread faster and you may slip on wet grass.

Specialists recommend to mow the lawn once a week (2 weeks) cutting 1/3 of the height of the grass. The height is very important especially in dry weather. Cutting your lawn too short may turn it into thatch as it will be burnt by sun, moreover the weeds may survive in such conditions.

Still, there are some recommendations considering the ideal height for the most popular grass types. So, Bahia grass; buffalo grass, fescue and blue grama should be 2-3 inch short. Bent grass is ok even at ¼-1 inch height. Bermuda grass grows well if it is ½-1 inch high. It is recommended to cut centipede grass and zoysia grass at 1-2 inch. St. Augustine grass likes the height of 1,5-2,5 inch. Kentucky bluegrass should not be cut shorter than 1,75 inch and the ideal height for Ryegrass is 1,5-2 inch.

Remember: the slower you move the mower the more thoroughly the grass is chopped and the more attractive the lawn looks.

For your safety you should check the mover and wear appropriate clothing, follow all the instructions written in owner’s manual. Do not disconnect any features of the mower. As lawn mowing may be a noisy work, take care of you hearing – wear appropriate ear protection. Do not let kids and pets play near you while you are mowing, because some parts of grass or objects may fly out and hurt them. Never let children operate or ride the mower. Fueling also should be done only by adults and when the mower is turned off and cool. Keep the lawn mower clean in a safe place where children cannot get.
