Lawn weeds
No doubt, every lawn owner wants his lawn too be weed-free. Unfortunately, it happens rarely because weeds like to attack lawns spreading unbelievably quickly. So, it is natural that lawn-owners often ask if there is any good means of fighting lawn weeds.
Yes, definitely, there are some. You can get rid of lawn weeds at least by two methods – natural and synthetic. The first one is, of course, more preferable, especially if you have pets and kids who like playing in the lawn.
Natural way of fighting lawn weeds may be performed by different ways. Firstly, lawn owners should know that thick grass doesn’t let the weeds grow, so you can try to grow very thick and vigorous grass which will block the sunlight and make the weeds fade and their seeds die. Another way of fighting lawn weeds is fertilization. But remember about the golden mean, because if you apply too little fertilizer, there will be no effect, if too much – you can cause serious lawn problems. But if everything is ok, the grass will take as much feeding s it needs, it will grow faster and thicker, becoming healthier and more good-looking. By the way, timing and frequency of fertilization should be considered individually in accordance with the type of the grass and soil.
Pay attention to watering you lawn. If you water it deeply and infrequently, it will be less invaded by weeds in comparison with when you water the lawn frequently and lightly. The reason is hidden in roots. Grass has deep roots and need deep watering, and weeds have shallow roots and like light watering, leaving no moisture too the grass.
Another way to keep the lawn weed-free is to mow it higher. If the grass is too low, the sunlight gets to the soil, awakens weed seeds and burns the grass. The ideal size is considered to be nearly 3 inches, but keep in mind that it may vary depending on the kind of the grass.
Nevertheless, the best natural means against weeds is hand-weeding, but it may take too much time, unfortunately.
If nothing helps, then you may use synthetic pre-emergent and post-emergent weed-killers. But be careful, because if you apply too much, it may cause serious harm to the children playing on the lawn.
So, if you have clover, dandelion, crabgrass, ground ivy, yellow woodsorrel, quackgrass, etc. on your lawn, make sure you've done everything possible before using herbicides.
