Spring lawn care

A lawn is an essential attribute of the landscape of any country house. Everybody knows that it needs a thorough care, especially in spring. The right spring lawn care is the guarantee of beauty and heath of the lawn in the summer.

First of all, slowly melting snowdrifts left after winter should be removed or spread evenly on the lawn. When there is nothing left from the snow, the lawn owner should do raking (even if it had already been done in autumn). Raking helps to control thatch by removing the leafs that died over the winter. Moreover, there is one more weighty reason for raking: it prevents the lawn from being affected by different diseases, such as “snow mold” or something of the kind.

A thorough check for compaction is what should be done next. There may appear some signs of decline of the lawn (for example, moss plants presence) if it was affected by high level of traffic during the year. The problem of compaction can be solved by aeration.

If you noticed the presence of moss on your lawn it may also signal acidity, which is not good for lawn. In this case liming can be a good remedy, but it will take some time unless positive results are noticed.

Sometimes in spring bare spots may appear on lawns due to certain reasons. This problem can be solved by filling these bare patches with grass, or overseeding. But overseeding is usually held in fall, as it is the best time for this purpose. Still, it is possible to overseed lawn in spring only if its look and condition leave much to be desired.

Fertilizing is one of the most important aspects of spring lawn care. It is possible to use organic and chemical fertilizers, but it should be also kept in mind that in spring lawns need lighter feeding than in the fall. Overfeeding may lead to some lawn diseases, so be careful with that.

Those who want to have their lawns weed-free, should also apply pre-emergent herbicides. It can be done together with fertilization. In the end of the spring in case some weeds still appear you can apply post-emergent herbicides.
