Winter lawn care

When winter comes it doesn’t mean that there is nothing left to do with your lawn. Despite the grass “goes to bed” in winter, it still needs care, otherwise there may appear some problems with the lawn in spring. So, what is winter lawn care?

First of all, in late autumn right before the first snow falls, it is recommended to clean the lawn as thoroughly as you can. There should not be even a leaf left. If you have some decorations and toys on your lawn – remove them, too. It is necessary to do due to the reason of health of your lawn. When the weather becomes cold, small animals (such as mice) and insects are searching for home to stay at in winter. And toys are rather good for this purpose. But if you let mice and insects live on your lawn, they can spoil it in spring. Moreover, decorations often may also create good conditions for diseases spread.

The second thing to do is mowing. But keep in mind that winter lawn care means lowering the height of a mower to 0.5 – 1 inch, because long grass smothers itself. Moreover, it can be damaged by frost and attacked by diseases easier. But it is also not recommended to cut the grass too short, as it becomes defenseless from severe winter conditions.

Try to control traffic as it can influence on the look of your lawn in spring. If some paths are worn heavily, they will slower green up when the spring comes. Moreover, heavy traffic causes compaction which is also not good for your lawn.

Pay attention to weather conditions. Some kinds of soil such as turf are not afraid even of extreme winter, but some other kinds need help. So, if you know that strong frost is coming, it is recommended to chip away the ice on your lawn. You can also clean up your lawn a little if there is too much snow. It can be done in order to reduce snow pressure and avoid soil and grass compaction.

All in all, it can be said that winter lawn care is not a hard task, but still your lawn needs a bit of attention.
